If You Don’t Build Lieutenants, You Become the Bottleneck
If everything runs through you, growth has a ceiling.
Every growing organization hits this wall.
Not because the leader isn’t skilled.
Not because the team isn’t talented.
But because everything still runs through one person.
That’s not leadership.
That’s dependency.
The moment your company outgrows your ability to personally touch every outcome, you need lieutenants.
Not helpers.
Not assistants.
Actual leaders-in-training.
People who can:
• Carry authority
• Make decisions
• Absorb mistakes
• And protect your time
This is where most leaders hesitate. Because apprenticeship is slow.
Messy.
And temporarily inefficient.
You have to let people do things
worse than you would
so they can eventually do things without you.
That requires:
• Letting meetings run without you
• Allowing failure without panic
• Giving responsibility before certainty
The goal isn’t to clone yourself perfectly. It’s to create people who can carry pieces of your role.
If no one on your team could realistically replace you in 2–3 years, you don’t have a leadership pipeline.
You have a ceiling.
If you stepped away for 30 days, what would break first and why?
