When Reality Changes, Adults Adjust
Are you still playing the old game?
They struggle because the rules changed… and they’re still playing the old game.
In this conversation, two things were true at the same time:
1.
Reality is harder than it used to be.
Prices go up.
Purchasing power goes down.
People have less margin.
It
is
tougher to create volume than it was years ago.
2.
If you refuse to adjust, you lose anyway.
Not because you’re bad.
Because business doesn’t care how things “used to work.”
This is the leadership tension:
You can’t deny reality, and you also can’t worship it.
Most people pick one extreme.
• They
obsess over reality
and become pessimistic. (“This is impossible.”)
• Or they
escape into fantasy
and become delusional. (“Just believe harder.”)
Neither works.
Mature leadership is:
name the constraints, then build around them.
That’s why “sales” becomes the uncomfortable but necessary conversation.
Not because it’s sexy.
Not because it’s fun.
Here’s the part most people miss:
You can’t equip someone with a skill you don’t respect.
If you
logically
understand sales but you
emotionally
resist it, your team will feel that.
You’ll say the right words and get zero movement.
Not because your team is “lazy.”
Because your energy isn’t congruent. So the work isn’t “try harder.”
The work is:
• Accept the new reality without resentment
• Build a better system inside it
• And stop treating adaptation like betrayal Because it’s not betrayal.
It’s leadership.
- • Where are you still running a strategy that worked in an older economy?
- • What skill are you avoiding because you “didn’t sign up for that”?
- • If you decided to be the adult here what would you change first: your attitude, your system, or your standards?
- • If you want help redesigning your strategy without burning your life down, that’s literally what coaching is for.
- No pressure just an option.
