Look At The Numbers. All Of Them.

The moment you look clearly, you regain the ability to move.

Most people don't look.

Not really.

They have a general sense.

A feeling.

A vague awareness that money is coming in and money is going out and somewhere in the middle there's either enough or there isn't.

But the actual numbers?

Fuzzy.

And the fuzzy is exactly where the anxiety lives.

Not in the numbers themselves.

In the not knowing.

Here's what happens when you actually sit down and look.

You find out it's not as bad as you thought.

Or you find out it's exactly as bad as you thought.

Either way.

You know.

And knowing, even when the number is uncomfortable, is always better than the fog.

Here's what a real picture looks like.

What do you owe?

Student loans.

Credit cards.

Car payments.

Every debt with a number attached.

What do you have?

Checking.

Savings.

Retirement.

Anything with your name on it.

Subtract one from the other.

That's your net worth.

For a lot of people that number is zero.

Not because they failed.

Because they haven't started yet.

Zero is not a verdict.

Zero is a starting line.

And here's what changes the moment you know the number.

You can do something about it.

Open an account.

Set up an automatic investment.

Put in whatever you can right now.

A hundred dollars a week.

Fifty.

It doesn't matter what the number is today.

What matters is that it moves.

Because here's what most people don't understand about compound interest.

It doesn't care how you feel about money.

It doesn't care that you started late.

It doesn't care that you have an MBA and definitely should have done this already.

It just works.

You put in five hundred dollars a month starting at thirty two.

You don't touch it.

Thirty years later you have three point four million dollars.

Two hundred and twenty five thousand of that is money you actually put in.

Three point one million is just time doing its job.

But none of that starts until you look.

Until you write it down.

Until you stop guessing and start actually knowing.

The anxiety isn't about the money.

It's about the fog.

Clear the fog.

Look at the numbers.

Then do the next thing.
