It’s 100% You

Every explanation that ends entirely with the market, company, or economy leaves you waiting for something else to change.

There’s a sentence I say in coaching that people usually hate before they understand why it matters: If it’s the company, you’re a victim. If it’s you, you can change it.

That doesn’t mean the company doesn’t matter.

The market matters.

The economy matters.

Leadership matters.

All of that is real.

But if your explanation for your results lives entirely outside of you, so does your power.

You’re waiting for the environment to change before you can change.

That’s the trap.

I was talking to someone recently who finally said: “It’s 100% me.”

And I didn’t let him turn that into guilt.

Because responsibility is not blame.

Responsibility is identifying what is actually yours to influence.

If your follow-up is inconsistent, you can change it.

If you stopped using the systems you know work, you can rebuild them.

If you know what to do but aren't doing it, you can execute.

That may be uncomfortable to admit.

But it’s also liberating.

Because now there’s something you can do.

He started thinking about the money he'd missed by not executing sooner.

And I told him: Make sure it’s not anxiety. Make sure it’s motivation.

That distinction matters.

Anxiety looks backward.

What have I been doing?

How much did I lose?

Why didn't I start sooner?

Motivation looks forward.

Okay. What am I doing now?

Responsibility without agency becomes shame.

Responsibility with agency becomes movement.

The point of recognizing the mistake isn't to punish yourself for it.

It's to stop repeating it.

The interesting thing is that he already knows what works.

He used to be the organization guy.

People came to him for advice about systems.

Then his own execution slipped, and he started questioning whether he had any right to give that advice.

But knowing and doing are different skills.

Your knowledge doesn't become false because your execution became inconsistent.

Sometimes you don't need another book.

Another framework.

Another productivity system.

Sometimes you already know enough.

You just need to do what you already know.

Put it on the calendar.

Remove the decision.

Create accountability.

Build the structure.

Then execute.

I want to be clear.

Ownership does not mean: Everything is my fault.

Some things aren't.

Markets change.

Companies make bad decisions.

People fail you.

Life happens.

The question isn't whether you caused everything.

The question is: What is mine now?

Your next action.

Your next decision.

Your next system.

Your response.

That's where agency lives.

So if you're not where you want to be, ask: What am I not doing that I already know I should be doing?

Then hear the answer without turning it into shame.

Because “

It’s me

” can sound like condemnation.

Or it can sound like freedom.

If it’s external, you wait.

If it’s you, you can change it.
