“Just Charge Something” Why Free Makes People Weird
People pay attention when they pay.
Stop Hiding Behind “Free”
There’s a principle that seems small… until you live it.
The question was:
“Should I do one-on-one coaching for free to validate the webinar?”
You can.
But it’s better to charge $5 or
Not because you need the money.
Because you need the relationship.
Free changes the energy.
When something is free:
• people ghost
• they no-show
• they don’t prepare
• they don’t implement
• they treat it like a favor instead of a commitment
And then you internalize it.
“Maybe my stuff isn’t valuable.”
No.
Your stuff might be valuable.
But free attracts casual energy.
People pay attention when they pay.
Even if it’s symbolic.
This is why I love the cheap beta phase.
• $5 session
•
• $20 session
• $25 webinar
Early stage is not about maximizing revenue.
It’s about maximizing reps.
You’re learning:
• how to lead a conversation
• how to hold space
• how to deliver value
• how to handle rejection
• how to follow up
• how to tighten the pitch
You don’t learn that inside your head.
You learn that in the field.
Perfectionism doesn’t build skill.
Repetition does.
Let’s normalize something else.
Your launch doesn’t need to be strategically perfect to be psychologically correct.
Yes — long term, the ideal model is:
Value → build audience → nurture → monetize.
That’s clean.
But psychologically?
Sometimes you need to ship something because you’re the kind of person who learns by doing.
And that’s fine. As long as you’re not expecting fantasy outcomes.
If you launch a $25 webinar expecting $5,000… you’re going to feel crushed.
If you launch expecting:
• 1–5 buyers
• feedback
• practice
• confidence
• momentum
Now you’re playing the right game.
Early wins are not about income.
They’re about identity.
There’s another layer here.
When you put yourself out there, some people will think:
“Who does this guy think he is?”
Those people don’t matter.
Because those same people will show up later saying:
“I always believed in you.”
No, they didn’t.
They were afraid to be seen failing publicly. So they criticized someone brave enough to be a beginner.
Most people’s ego is too big to start small.
If you can become the person who fails forward, you’re already ahead of
90%
of the field.
Here’s the uncomfortable question:
Are you using “free” as a shield?
Because if it’s free, you don’t have to measure results.
You don’t have to face conversion rates.
You don’t have to evaluate performance. You don’t have to feel rejection.
Free can protect your ego.
A small price creates accountability. Without creating pressure.
And let’s be clear about the stage you’re in.
Early stage is not money stage.
Early stage is skill acquisition.
You’re not building income yet.
You’re building capacity.
Money comes after the machine exists.
If you try to extract before you build capacity, you’ll burn out.
If you build skill long enough, income becomes inevitable.
If you’re not sure whether you’re building for income or building the skill that eventually produces income, it might be time for an outside perspective.
